Prevalence and incidence of thyroid disorder during pregnancy in Bangladesh - a tertiary care hospital based study

Objectives: To establish the prevalence and incidence of thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy in a tertiary care center Bangladesh. Methodology: 749 cases were randomly selected among pregnant women who reported to antenatal clinic. Later 121 excluded as they already diagnosed disorder. The rest investigated for stimulating hormone (TSH) if required then also free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroxine (FT4), peroxidase antibody (TPOAb). Thyroid status was classified according TSH level – euthyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism, overt hypothyroidism hyperthyroidism (sub-clinical hyperthyroidism, Graves’ disease/toxic multinodular goiter, transient pregnancy). And all patients divided into 2 groups normal/euthyroidism abnormal/thyroid disorder, considering their status. Result: disorder 34.98% 22.45%. mean levels (μIU/mL) 1st, 2nd 3rd trimester 2.67±3.59, 2.39±1.87 2.74±3.98, respectively. Significant number hypothyroid detected rural people (P 0.004). There significant difference euthyroid 0.029) SCHTh - 0.031) at different stages gestation. with goiter ˂0.001) TPOAb patient groups. Conclusion: disorders are common pregnancy. Early detection proper treatment can help better outcome. Hence, function test must be advised women.
